The person behind the work

I’m Ellie Atkins — a strategic leader, practitioner, researcher and speaker working across homelessness, social work, safeguarding and multiple disadvantage.

For more than 20 years, I’ve worked alongside people experiencing complex forms of exclusion, and with the professionals, organisations and systems trying to respond.

But my perspective was shaped long before my career began.

A different starting point

I grew up in Wales and left home at 15.

My early life was far from straightforward. I experienced domestic violence and homelessness, and spent a period living in a basic caravan in Manchester.

During that time, a housing officer helped me access somewhere safe to stay.

That experience stayed with me.

It showed me the difference that one person, one relationship and one system response can make.

I went on to study social work and build a career focused on understanding what happens when people and systems meet — particularly when people don't fit neatly into the pathways designed to support them.

My lived experience doesn't define my expertise. It informs how I see.

From practice to research

My career has developed across frontline social work, service leadership, safeguarding, homelessness, workforce development, research and strategic change.

Alongside practice, I have developed as a practitioner-academic, working with research partners and contributing to national conversations about homelessness, social work and multiple disadvantage.

My research interests include hidden disability, equity, accessibility and the gap between what systems intend to provide and what people are actually able to access.

I’m particularly interested in one question:

What do we know — and what do we do differently because of it?

From individual experience to system change

Today, my work sits across people, practice and systems.

I work with organisations to understand complexity, challenge assumptions, strengthen practice and create change that lasts.

I believe the best solutions rarely come from one profession or one service.

They come from connecting knowledge, experience and people across boundaries.

Beyond the work

There is another part of me that doesn't appear on a CV.

In 2025, I learned to sail and went on to circumnavigate Britain on a 30-foot boat.

It was uncomfortable, frightening and, at times, completely outside my sense of what was possible.

It taught me something I now recognise across my professional life:

You don't always need to feel ready to begin.

You need curiosity, courage, preparation — and the willingness to keep learning.

I now volunteer with Tallships, supporting young people through sailing experiences that build confidence, resilience and teamwork.

What drives me

I believe in:

Curiosity over assumption.
Relationships over transactions.
Evidence over opinion.
Possibility over limitation.
People at the centre of systems.

And I believe that complexity is not a reason to expect less.

It is a reason to think harder.

This is the work I care about.

Helping people and organisations see differently, act differently and create better systems for people who too often fall through the gaps.
